There are a few different types of siding: Vinyl, Hardie Board/Fiber Cement, Wood, EFIS/Dryvitt (Exterior Finish Insulated Systems). You probably have a good idea of what you want to use on your home but below is a little info on siding products.
Vinyl siding is today's most commonly used residential siding. It is pretty maintenance free and also one of the most affordable ways to enhance the exterior of your home. It will last you a very long time and holds up well to the four seasons we get in New York. Vinyl siding will range in thickness from .035 to .055 inches. Obviously the thicker the siding the more durable it is and the better it will stand up to the high winds. Cost is usually between $2.50 - $4.00 a square foot.
Fiber Cement Board
Fiber Cement Board is another type of siding which holds up very good to all elements of the weather in New York. Probably one of the most durable products as far as siding goes. Fiber Cement does require paint and caulk which means there will be maintenance and some up keep to keep the exterior of your home looking good. Installation prices range from $4.50 - $9.00 a square foot.
Wood siding gives your homa a beautiful look but it comes with a big price tag. If you decide to use this product make sure you know what type of wood you want, the reveal/exposure and the style because the prices can range greatly. A couple different styles to choose from are Clapboard, Bevel, Tongue & Groove, Ship Lap, Rustic Vee, Board & Batten and of course Cedar Shake .The more information you have for the contractor the better and more accurate price he can give you.
EFIS/Dryvitt siding is more commonly used on commercial buildings but can be used in residential applications. It is a system in which you install foam on the wall then you embed mesh into a cementitous adhesive base coat then covered with a finish coat that is usually made up of a quartz aggregate that is mixed in with a latex based paint. Prices for this start at $7.00 a square foot and up.
